Seismic response of a steel resilient frame equipped with self‐centering column bases with friction devices

In the last two decades many researchers focused on development of innovative building structures with aim achieving seismic resilience. Among others, steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs) equipped friction devices in beam-to-column joints have emerged as an effective solution able to dissipate input energy while also ensuring damage-free behaviour system. However, date, little attention has been paid their column bases, which represent fundamental components order achieve fact, bases designed by current conventional approaches lead significant damage and residual drifts leading difficult-to-repair structures. The present paper evaluates performance MRFs damage-free, self-centring, rocking base joints. proposed consists a splice joint where is controlled combination devices, providing dissipation capacity, pre-loaded threaded bars disk springs, introducing restoring forces joint. design procedure presented, numerical OpenSees model developed simulate response perimeter seismic-resistant frame, including hysteretic connection. Non-linear dynamic analyses carried out set ground motions records investigate effectiveness protecting first storey columns from yielding reducing drifts. Incremental Dynamic Analyses are used influence record-to-record variability derive fragility curves for whole structure several local engineering demand parameters frame results show that key requirement when self-centering objective.
